Hounslow Young Sports Stars Strike Gold
Outstanding performances saw team improve on last year's position
Over 120 young athletes represented Team Hounslow in the 2013 Balfour Beatty London Youth Games which culminated in the Grand Final at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre last weekend (July 7)
Stars of the games were Paralympic prospect Kyle Powell, who won gold in both the 100m and 200m group E disability sprint race and the BMX team who also won gold.

Other outstanding performances came from Jahrel Murphy and Callum Mitchell who won bronze medals in Swimming, and Miles Clarke who won Team Hounslow’s first ever Aquathlon medal by finishing in 3rd in the year 9 race. Aqualthon, which features running and swimming, is considered a stepping-stone to a full triathlon, Mile’s success helped the Aquathlon team finish in 8th place, ten places higher than last year! Their dramatic rise up the tables was possible thanks to a sports development grant from Balfour Beatty and 95.8FM Help a Capital Child.

Thirteen of Hounslow’s teams achieved top ten finishes including 5th place for Basketball (boys and girls), Boys Volleyball, Boccia and Rowing, 8th place for Badminton, Trampolining and Aquathlon and 9th place for Netball, Girls Tag Rugby, Boys Cricket and Angling. The team, managed by registered charity Fusion Lifestyle in partnership with the London Borough of Hounslow, finished in 21 st place, improving their 2012 place by one position.

Councillor Sachin Gupta, the Mayor of Hounslow, and Leader of the Council, Councillor Jagdish Sharma, were on hand to cheer on the team. The Mayor, Cllr Gupta, said of Team Hounslow’s performance; “Team Hounslow’s performance was the result of a tremendous amount of dedication from competitors; the legacy of London 2012 is strong and bodes well for successful athletes in the future who will hail from the borough.”
The London Youth Games is Europe’s largest annual youth sports event. A record 104,463 youngLondoners took part in the record-breaking 2012 London Youth Games.
