West London Queer Project (WLQP) is hosting a comedy event to mark Lesbian Day of Visibility on 26 April, the final day of Lesbian Visibility Week. This week is dedicated to increasing the visibility of lesbian, bisexual, queer women, and non-binary people within the LGBTQ+ community.
The event will feature a lineup of UK-based comedians, including Twayna Mayne, Catherine Bohart, and Sapphire Macintosh. The show will take place in West London and is intended as a celebratory close to the week’s activities.
Background: Lesbian Visibility Week and Day of Visibility
Lesbian Visibility Week is an international initiative aimed at highlighting the experiences, contributions, and issues affecting LGBTQIA+ women and non-binary people. Activities across the UK and globally focus on increasing representation in public life, media, workplaces, education, and culture.
The acronym LGBTQ+ refers to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, with the “+” encompassing a broader range of gender identities and sexual orientations.
The positioning of the “L” at the beginning of LGBTQ+ is often linked to historical recognition of lesbian activism during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s. During this period, many lesbians were involved in caregiving, advocacy, fundraising, and support efforts for those affected, particularly gay and bisexual men who faced significant stigma and barriers to healthcare.
Importance of Visibility
Research and advocacy groups have highlighted that LGBTQIA+ women and non-binary people are frequently underrepresented in media and research, and may face disparities in areas such as healthcare access, safety, and mental health outcomes. Visibility initiatives aim to address these gaps by promoting awareness and inclusion.
Event Overview
WLQP’s comedy show is designed as a cultural event to conclude Lesbian Visibility Week. The organisers describe comedy as a means of bringing people together and providing a shared social experience.
