Lord Alf Dubs Gives Upper Room Winter Lecture

Asking what has happened to child refugees at St Saviour's

The Upper Room Winter Lecture Series continues on Thursday 30 March with a talk at St Saviour's Church by Lord Alf Dubs asking: "What has happened to the unaccompanied child refugees in Europe?"

Lord Dubs, who lives locally, arrived in the UK in 1939 was himself a refugee, fleeing the persecution of Jews in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia at the age of six.

He was a Battersea MP from 1979-87 and Director of the Refugee Council 1988-95.

He became a peer in 1994, served in the Northern Ireland Office from 1997-99 and was chair of the Labour peers from 2000-05.

In 2016 he proposed an amendment to the Immigration Bill which said the government should "make arrangements" to relocate and support 3,000 unaccompanied refugee children from other countries in Europe. MPs rejected the amendment.

All the speakers in this series have given their time free to support The Upper Room, a charity based at St Saviour which has been been working to help socially disadvantaged people in London since 1990, including homeless people, economic migrants and ex-offenders.

All lectures will take place in St Saviour’s Church, Cobbold Road, W12 9LN, 8pm-9pm. Refreshments will be available from 7.40pm. Admission is FREE, but Donations welcome.

The final talk in the series, on April 26 will be by Lord David Willetts asking: "Did the baby boomers let their children down?"
