Smell From Mogden Sewage Works Could 'Spoil' ' Rugby World Cup
Ruth Cadbury calls for action from Thames Water on air quality
Newly-elected MP for Brentford & Isleworth, Ruth Cadbury, has called on Thames Water to take action on the noxious smells from Mogden Sewage works warning that rugby fans at the upcoming Rugby Cup at Twickenham could be subject to “the stench of sewage floating over the stadium”.
She said the smell generated by the sewage works caused as much damage to the quality of air for residents in Isleworth and Hounslow as the pollution caused by overflying aircrart.
Speaking in a parliamentary debate about air pollution, the newly-elected MP said she had already received numerous complaints from residents about Mogden, and cited her experience of having worked with the local Mogden Residents Action Group as a Councillor. She called on the new Government Minister, Rory Stewart, to meet with her and local residents to try and reach a solution to the problem. read the transcript of the debate
Ruth Cadbury said; “The problems at Mogden have been going on for many years, and local residents continue to have concerns about the communication and response from Thames Water, whose handling of the ongoing situation has been inadequate. I will continue to call on Thames Water to find a satisfactory and permanent solution.”
She is demanding that Hounslow Council consider serving a third abatement notice on Thames Water. During the debate on air quality, Ms Cadbury reiterated her opposition to a third runway at Heathrow, stating that expansion would lead to ‘further breaches of EU air quality legislation.’
She told Radio Five Live that fans watching matches at Twickenham during the upcoming Rugby World Cup could be subject to “the stench of sewage floating over the stadium”, causing great embarrassment for the UK and tournament organisers.
