Groups discussed threats to river from development
The West London River Group held its AGM at Ranelagh Sailing Club. Of the 28 member societies, which in Chiswick include the Dukes Meadows Trust, the Grove Park Group and the Strand-on-the-Green Society, many are facing threats from development plans.
One of the most serious examples of the kind of issues that the WLRG and its members have to deal with is the planning application from Fulham Football Club which wishes to encroach over 10m into the river to build a new audience stand, and has been given permission by Hammersmith & Fulham and the Mayor of London.
Further upstream, WLRG members including the Chiswick members, Kew Society and the Brentford Community Council fear that the proposed "enabling development" for Brentford Football Club will blight the views over Kew Bridge and from the Thames.
A new Acting Chairman of the WLRG, Angela Dixon, was appointed, along with several new officers. Angela was one of the founder members of the WLRG and was former Chairman of the Hammersmith & Fulham Historic Buildings.
The WLRG reaffirmed its support for the Thames Strategy, Kew to Chelsea, and praised the work of the Strategy Co-ordinator, Ruth Hutton, who has raised funding for several projects along the Thames, including the new towpath at Mortlake, and an interpretation board at Fulham.
