Richmond Theatre Search For Local Art Work

Anyone can submit pieces for exhibition

Richmond Theatre is putting out a call for any and all local artists to submit work for a one-off exhibition celebrating life in Richmond and the surrounding areas. Artists of all abilities, from professionals to beginners aspiring to be the next Van Gogh, are welcome to submit their work for consideration in an exhibition which will run at the theatre from Monday 5 to Saturday 10 August during the run of The Pitmen Painters.

Richmond Theatre has taken inspiration from the play which is based on the true story of a group of Ashington Miners. In 1934 The Pitmen Painters began studying art appreciation at evening classes before rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice and started painting. Within a few years the miners had become friends with many avant-garde artists and their work, which mostly depicted aspects of their own lives, was acquired by prestigious art collections while they continued to work in the mines. The play is a humorous, moving and timely examination of ordinary people who do extraordinary things.

West London has a wealth of local art galleries and artistic talent, with many people who are creating extraordinary things out of very ordinary circumstances. So for the week that The Pitmen Painters will be at Richmond on its UK tour, the walls of the Stalls Bar in the Theatre will be handed over to showcase the work of local artists. Anyone is welcome to submit a piece of work which they feel represents their life in Richmond and the surrounding areas. To be considered for the exhibition, simply send a clear photo of your piece to rtmarketing@theambassadors.com by Monday 29 July. Successful entrants will be contacted the following day and the artworks selected for inclusion in the exhibition will need to be brought to the theatre by Friday 2 August. All artists whose work will be on display during the week will also receive a pair of tickets to the opening night of the exhibition and The Pitmen Painters.

Richmond Theatre’s General Manager Kate Wrightson said: “Whether you are a professional artist or someone who simply enjoys painting or sketching for their enjoyment, we want to encourage everyone to get involved to create something truly representative of life in our community”.

The exhibition will run from Monday 5 to Saturday 10 August alongside The Pitmen Painters and is free to all ticket holders. Tickets range from £10 to £25 (premium seats £29.50) and can be booked through the box office on 0844 871 7651 or by visiting www.atgtickets.com/richmond  (fees apply).
