Concern Over Future Plans For Kew Gardens

Zac Goldsmith will speak at public meeting

A public meeting about the impact of budget and staffing cuts on the service that Kew provides will take place on
Wednesday 22nd October, 7.00pm – 8.45pm at
The Avenue Halls, The Avenue, Kew TW9 2AJ
Just off Kew Road – nearest Tube is Kew Gardens (District line).

Kew Gardens has a reported £5 million hole in its budget following a reduction of £1.5 million in funding from the Department for Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Managers say this cannot be filled without a cut of sixth of the staff which means that up to 125 jobs could be lost. Plans have already been made for 90 jobs to be axed this calendar year.

According to the Guardian newspaper the cuts were approved against the advice of consultants for Defra, who told ministers that Kew would lose its world class status if its operating grant was not maintained.

Speakes will include MPs Zac Goldsmith and John McDonnell.
