Council Scoops Major Transport Awards

LBH judged most improved transport borough with best cycle improvements

A scheme that saw a fourfold increase in the number of children cycling to participating schools in the London Borough of Hounslow was one of two projects to receive prestigious awards for the council.

The London Borough of Hounslow was judged most improved transport borough and won the prize in the cycle improvements category at the London Transport Awards.

The awards, which celebrate excellence in London’s transport industry, were presented by Jeremy Vine at the London Hilton. Hounslow was the only borough to win two awards.

Cllr Barbara Reid, said, "This is a wonderful endorsement of our work in responding to the transport needs of local people. We have designed and installed a number of ambitious improvements to the street network and improved conditions for buses, cyclists, and pedestrians, without impairing general traffic flows.

“But we know we still have a lot of work to do to make transport and the streetscape in the borough better for local people.

"These awards recognise how we've worked with local people when making improvements, and we need to build on this and seek to make further improvements in the future.”

The most improved transport prize was awarded in recognition of improvements to bus priority, cycle facilities and training, school travel planning, walking and the public realm.

The award for cycling improvements recognised the borough's commitment to promoting cycling with its "try cycling to school” and "Cyclicious” schemes, which saw a 400 per cent increase in cycling to the schools that participated in the programme.
