Local Politics For The New Generation
Student experiences inside track how a campaign is run
Prospective Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Brentford and Isleworth, Mary Macleod has taken sixteen year old Saba Ahmed under her wing and has been teaching her a thing or two about local politics.
Mary, who says she is keen to motivate young people to become involved in politics, said “I was very encouraged to see that Saba was so eager to learn more about politics, both on a local and national level.
"I believe we achieve a strong sense of community by sharing responsibility and supporting each other, no matter how old you are. This is why I think it is important for everyone to be involved in politics, regardless of their age.”
Saba Ahmed, a student at the Green School for Girls, said, “I wanted to do something different during the summer holidays, so I simply emailed Mary to ask if I could shadow her for a month. It has been very interesting to see the work she does for the local community.”
Now nearing the end of her work experience, Saba reflects on her time at the Conservative Campaign Headquarters. “I think I have gained a better insight as to how a political campaign is run. After having worked with Mary, I am definitely going to take a more active interest in politics in the future.”
