Get Composting This Autumn

Compost bins available at large discount

Green-fingered residents getting ready to clear up the garden this autumn can get discounted compost bins from the council.

To encourage home composting, and to divert garden waste from landfill, the council are offering reduced price compost bins from as little as £6.00 (RRP £39) plus £5.49 delivery.

Councillor Colin Ellar, deputy leader and cabinet member for environment at the council, said:

“As we head into autumn, it’s time to think about tidying up the garden and preparing the soil for the spring.

“Garden pruning’s, spent bedding plants and grass cuttings can all be recycled over the coming months to produce a nutrient-rich supply of compost for next spring – for free!

“Composting garden waste not only helps to significantly reduce our carbon emissions, it is also an effective and sustainable method to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. “

It’s important to have a good mixture of materials if you want to make good quality compost. As well as green garden waste, you can compost fruit and vegetable peelings, tea bags, pet hair, and even shredded paper.  Try to aim for a 50/50 mix of ‘greens’ (vegetable peelings, old flowers, grass cuttings, spent bedding plants) and ‘browns’ (garden prunings, coffee grounds, tissues and paper napkins, cardboard, vacuum cleaner dust).

If you get it right, this autumn’s waste will provide a free supply of nutritious soil conditioner that will enrich your spring planting, producing an abundance of flowers, fruit and vegetables next year.

A variety of sizes and composting accessories are also available at special offer prices exclusive to the council.
