Hounslow Council has announced that it is to allow people to use on street pay and display bays all day during the forthcoming bus strike.

The concession means that it will be possible to leave a vehicle in an on-street bay all-day without incurring a Penalty Charge Notice on the days when industrial action is planned. It is expected that bus services across the borough will be disrupted.

The amnesty does not appear to include council owned car parks.

Cllr Hanif Khan, Cabinet Member for Transport and One Hounslow said, “If industrial action is widespread there is likely to be seriously disruption to public transport because - due to Covid restrictions - any buses still running will not have capacity to accommodate displaced passengers.

“To help our residents who genuinely have no other option but to drive for all or part of their journey, if the bus strike does go ahead, drivers will be able to park in any on-street pay-to-park bay beyond the normal maximum 2 or 4 hour stay without further charge. To benefit from this, the driver must purchase the maximum permitted stay in the normal way using Pay-to-Park or a pay and display machine. Although the ticket will show the parking period ending after 2 or 4 hours, we will not issue a penalty charge notice providing the car is moved before the start of the next day’s paid-for parking period. This special arrangement will run between 08:00 Monday 22 February and 20:00 Wednesday 24 February.”

“But that will only help a little, so we recommend that if at all possible, residents plan not to travel on Monday 22nd to Wednesday 24th, and if they have to travel, to check live travel information.”

“We suggest too, that residents consider cycling (using route maps) or walking using route maps at: tfl.gov.uk/walking."

Members of the Unite union are taking industrial action over changed working conditions with drivers claiming that the new arrangements have effectively given them pay cuts of up to £2,500 per annum.
