The slow process of reopening leisure centres across the borough of Hounslow continues with the return of the Fountains Leisure Centre in Brentford.

It will reopen on Monday (14 December) except for the swimming pool which will not be back in action until the following Monday.

There is still no indication of when New Chiswick Pool will open but Cllr Guy Lambert reported in his weekly update on BrentfordTW8.com that an installation of a new boiler for the facility had not been successful and a new part is needed to make it work.

Hounslow Council claims that the process of transfer of ownership can usually mean a loss of service for 4-6 months and that. given that Lampton Leisure has recently taken over as operator from Fusion Lifestyle, this is a good performance.

The Council maintains that a phased approach to reopening would always have been required, and there have been challenges along the way including catastrophic boiler failures, installing Covid-secure measures and Brentford Fountain being proposed as an NHS mass vaccination site.

Swimming pools and gyms run by neighbouring local authorities opened up as soon as the second lockdown restrictions ended.

Cllr Samia Chaudhary, Cabinet Member for Leisure Services, said: “It’s great to have announced the first two phases of reopening our leisure centres and public halls. Seeing people safely return to the venues that they love and depend on makes me feel optimistic for the future. We’ve had our share of challenges over the last weeks, but I want to thank local communities for their patience and am positive the changes these vital spaces are undergoing will be for the better.”
