Early Bird Offer for Garden Waste Services Subscribers

Hounslow aim to encourage people to pay new charges by offering discount

Hounslow Council are offering an early bird discount to early adopters of their controversial new garden waste scheme.

There will be an annual charge for the collection of garden waste in the borough from 4 April 2016. The current free boroughwide collection service will be provided until this date.

The Council say that charging prevents misuse of the current service by gardening contractors and means the council can continue to offer collections to households that want it.

In advance of the introduction of an annual subscription for the council's garden waste service, residents are being offered two exclusive deals.

Residents who subscribe to the new, fortnightly service will pay an annual subscription of £50 per year, or £25 per year if they receive council tax support. Anyone signing up before 29 February will receive a ten per cent discount; £5 or £2.50 off the annual cost, respectively.

Most households will be provided with a new, brown 240 litre wheelie bin. If you do not have space for a bin, or have difficulty using one, you can apply to use two 90 litre reusable sacks.

As part of the service changes, the council is offering a free composter, usually worth around £20, to households who wish to compost their garden waste at home. This limited offer is on a first come, first served basis.

Councillor Steve Curran, Leader of Hounslow Council, said: "During a time of harsh government cuts, the council has to make difficult decisions so we can protect essential services and keep council tax low.

"Not all residents use the garden waste service – but they all pay for it through their council tax. It’s fair to ask those who need it to pay a small amount to continue to receive a fortnightly doorstep service. "

"Anyone who doesn't want to pay, or can't afford to pay, can compost their garden waste or take it to Space Waye Reuse and Recycle Centre, In Pier Road, Feltham, or to civic amenities sites in neighbouring boroughs."

Residents can subscribe to the service by completing a form online.

A special hotline has also been set up for residents to subscribe to the service. Call 020 8583 2060, Monday to Friday from 5-7.30pm until 4 March. Residents can also call the Council's customer call centre on 020 8583 5555 during office hours. (There may be longer waiting times when calling this number.)

Bins will be delivered at the end of March along with a collection calendar and more details about the service.
