Wheelie Bins Trial A Success Say Hounslow Council

Chiswick Riverside was one of the three trial areas

The trial of wheeled bins in three areas of the borough has proved to be "hugely popular" according to Hounslow Council.

The Council survey showed that 85% of residents in the Riverside ward of Chiswick who responded to the survey, were in favour of using wheelie bins - this compares with 98% in favour in Hounslow West.

Out of the 7,300 properties taking part in the trial, 2,300 residents responded to a survey sent out in November last year.

Residents in Chiswick had not been in favour of wheeled bins when the trial was announced.

Hounslow Council say the survey shows that the trial has also led to an increase in the recycling rate and less litter on streets.

According to the Council, the survey in the wheeled bin pilot area – which covers 7,300 households in Hounslow West, Heston West, Feltham West, Syon and Chiswick Riverside - saw an increase in the recycling rate from 37 per cent to 41 per cent.

It also revealed 93 per cent of residents were in favour of their new bin and 86 per cent said there had been less spillage and littering since they were introduced.

Councillor Colin Ellar , deputy leader and cabinet member for environment, said: “These results are encouraging and I am particularly pleased in the way the bins have helped make the streets cleaner.

“The increase in recycling rate is also good news for council tax payers as it helps the council reduce the amount of landfill tax it has to pay.”

More results from the survey include:

  • Use of the recycling box service has increased from 73.3 per cent of residents placing out their recycling box in April to 83.6 per cent in November. Use of the plastics recycling service has increased from 71.5 per cent, placing our plastics recycling in April to 79.9 per cent in November.
  • The recycling rate in the trial area has increased from 37 per cent to 41 per cent, this is the proportion of household rubbish that is recycled or composted.
  • 93 per cent of residents are in favour of using a wheeled bin for the collection of their household rubbish across all trial areas. This ranges from 85 per cent in Chiswick Riverside to 98 per cent in Hounslow West.
  • 86 per cent of residents in trial areas agreed that there was less spillage and littering since wheeled bins were introduced with 67 per cent of residents thinking there was a lot less spillage and littering.
  • 80 per cent of residents were satisfied or very satisfied with the collection of household rubbish from a wheeled bin.
  • There is a 33 per cent reduction in household rubbish in the trial areas with an average of 457kg of residual waste per annum compared to 533kg by households in non trial areas.
  • At present the collection of rubbish from wheeled bins will continue in the trial area only. All other residents should continue to place their rubbish out for collection in black sacks or 80 litre dustbins, placed at the edge of your property by 7am on your collection day.
