Keeping Safe On The Way To School
Primary children compose rhymes on road safety
A Chiswick pupil from William Hogarth Primary was amongst those who won a prize in a Council poetry competition about road safety.
Noah Jama was a runner up in the competition to compose a poem about keeping safe on the trip to and from school.
The winner was Alishba Chaudry from Norwood Green Junior School, who won a school travel goodie bag. Runners up were Noah Jama and Molly Fendelly, St Mary’s Roman Catholic Junior School in Isleworth.
Here is Alishba’s poem:
‘Walking to school with my friends is cool, but safety comes first by following the rules, it’s better on foot than in the car, there’s no pollution, so it’s better by far! Walking to school is cool!’
‘Walking is good for all lads and lasses, you increase your fitness not greenhouse gassed! Cars and vans, they may be quicker, but carbon dioxide, it makes us sicker! Walking to school is cool!’
‘You can laugh and joke with your friends while walking, pass on the message and get everyone talking, leave the car at home and break that machine, walking is cool and helps us go green! Walking to school is cool!’
Alishba received her prize from Hounslow’s Deputy Mayor Cllr Corinna Smart at a special ceremony last week. Cllr Smart said: “The competition is a great way to raise awareness among pupils of how to stay safe, particularly in the winter months. The poetry competition had to include messages about road safety and I am very pleased that so many pupils took part.”
