Over one thousand sign Hounslow Council petition to ban habit
Hounslow’s bid to ban spitting in public is proving popular with over 1,500 people signing up to a petition to stamp out the habit in the borough.
Councillor Ed Mayne , cabinet member for community safety and regulatory services, said: “I am very pleased the petition has struck a chord with residents. More than 1,500 people signing up to the petition after just one month is fantastic.”
The petition, which is in both online and paper form, was launched on 23 September.
Cllr Mayne added: “We need to keep up the momentum. If we can get hundreds more backing the ban it would send a clear message to the Government that residents want to stamp out this disgusting habit in Hounslow.”
The petition follows a council motion proposing a ban on spitting which received cross party support earlier this year. In order to introduce a ban, the council needs to demonstrate public support for a by-law.
The petition is available online at www.hounslow.gov.uk/spitting and in paper form in all borough libraries, and at the Civic Centre, Lampton Road, Hounslow.
The petition will run until 18 December.
