Hard Hitting Film Message To Young Drivers

Hounslow Council wants to drive home road safety message

The devastating impact of careless driving is brought home to young drivers, in two innovative films created by the council.

The time-lapse films tell the stories of Georgia and Alex through their social network, as they each prepare for a night out with their friends that they will never forget.

Each film introduces the main character as they sign up to a social network, and brings their story to life through the information they are sharing with friends in a way that is easy for young people to relate to.

Cllr Ed Mayne, cabinet member for community safety and regulatory services at the council, said:

“With young drivers making up a disproportionate number of those involved in accidents, we wanted to try to reach them in a way that they can relate to.

"Driving is a serious responsibility, and we want young people to remember that getting rid of the L-plates doesn’t give you a free rein to act irresponsibly, and their actions can have devastating consequences.

“These powerful films have had a great reaction so far, and we’re rolling them out to schools and colleges to use in lessons and discussions, to drive home the consequences of unsafe driving.”

In the last two years, there have been 160 casualties for 16-20 year olds in Hounslow, and the council is committed to reducing the number of young drivers killed or injured on the borough’s roads.

Within a day of being launched last week, the videos were seen more than 1,000 times on YouTube and the council’s Facebook page.
