Council sponsor sessions of female-only bike club from July 16
Wannabe women cyclists have been urged to join a new female-only bike club. The club is aimed at women aged 14-plus who are looking to get fit and healthy and will start on Tuesday, July 16th at Hounslow Civic Centre, using Lampton Park for its first session.
The Council-sponsored initiative is aimed at getting a higher representation of women in the sport.
Councillor Ajmer Grewal, cabinet member for leisure and public health, said: “Cycling used to be seen as a male-dominated sport, but with the success of Victoria Pendleton and Laura Trott, more women are beginning to take it up. As a biking borough, Hounslow is doing its bit to keep women’s cycling in the fast lane.”
The council, together with its partners in the Community Sport and Physical Activity Network (CS PAN), set up the sessions because of under-representation of women in cycling.
The women’s bike club starts on Tuesday 16 July, from 6pm at Hounslow Civic Centre, using Lampton Park, with sessions lasting for one and a half hours.

This initiative is part of a wider programme of opportunities encouraging women to be more active in the borough that is the result of a successful partnership funding application by Hounslow CS PAN to Sport England that is being led by St Mary’s University Centre for Workplace and Community Health.

Hounslow is home to some of the capital’s most enthusiastic cyclists, with 4.4 % of trips originating in the borough made by bike, according to TfL’s recent London Travel Demand Survey.
The borough will also host the Prudential RideLondon event on Sunday 4 August www.prudentialridelondon.co.uk and will be making a bid to become one of the Mayor of London’s ‘mini Holland‘ cycling boroughs.
Hounslow was named the first outer London ‘Biking Borough’. ‘Biking Boroughs ’ is a Mayor of London initiative to get more people cycling in outer London.
Hounslow hosted the first major Mayor’s outer London Skyride in August 2009.
The council and TfL are currently designing Cycle Superhighway 9 along the A315, aiming to make it the best Cycle Superhighway in terms of infrastructure quality and continuity.
