Council Helps Businesses Bike to Work

Local firms called upon to promote cycling for employees

Octink in Brentford is the latest business to benefit from financial support provided by Hounslow Council to help promote greener, healthier transport to their site.

The council provided match-funding towards new cycle parking and showers in response to requests from staff.  With their new facilities in place Octink were able to join the council in signing the government’s ‘Cycle to Work Guarantee’.

This voluntary scheme encourages businesses of all kinds to positively promote cycling to work to their employees, providing quality cycle parking and changing areas as well as giving out information on cycling safety and bike maintenance and running a ‘cycle to work scheme’ which reduces the cost of purchasing a bike.

Cllr Corinna Smart, cabinet member for environment said: ““Small and cost effective measures such as showers and cycle parking can make a real difference and help remove a key barrier to people choosing two wheels instead of four for their commute.

“Salary sacrifice initiatives such as the cycle to work scheme can even save businesses money through a reduction in employer national insurance contribution, meaning everyone benefits.

“I would urge other businesses to contact us if you need help in making your workplace a greener, healthier place.”
