Mixed GCSE Results for Local Schools

Excellence in some schools hides below par scores overall

Whilst nationwide schools are celebrating the a record level of GCSE passes concerns remain about the overall quality of education in Hounslow borough after a mixed set of results.

Excluding the four Voluntary Aided Schools, which are outside the control of the Local Authority and were the top four performing schools at GCSE level, only two borough schools were above the national average. Without the Voluntary Aided Schools the borough's results would have been well below the average.

Chiswick Community School achieved a significant increase from last year with 58% of students getting 5 A* to C grades. Seven students who gained 8 A*/A grades or more.

Brentford School for Girls saw results decline marginally for the second term in a row and are now more than 14% behind the national average.

Isleworth and Syon School equaled their best ever results. 53 students gained 10 or more high grade passes and seventeen students amassed 13 or more high passes

Gunnersbury School achieved outstanding results with 22 per cent achieving grades A* and A. In French out of 1761 entries four Gunnersbury Students were amongst the top 10 highest achievers in the country.

The three worst performing schools in the borough had been put on a list as part of the National Challenge Programme in which Hounslow Council was warned that unless a rescue plan was put in place they risked being closed down and reopened as an academy. This year only one school failed to hit the Government's target of 30% achieving 5 A* - C passes including English and Maths. Hounslow Manor School managed to pass the target by just 1%
