Gas Repairs and Burst Water Main Cause Chaos on Uxbridge Road

Askew Road also closed on Thursday morning due to security alert

There has been traffic chaos in Shepherd's Bush on Thursday, April 30 due to the combination of two sets of closures on Uxbridge Road and a security alert on Askew Road.

The westbound carriageway of Uxbridge Road between Shepherd's Bush Green and Lime Grove is closed for the next ten weeks due to National Grid repairs.

Today however, there have also been closures on the east carriageway due to a burst water main at the junction of Uxbridge Road and Pennard Road.

TfL Traffic New is warning @TFLTrafficNews: "A4020 Uxbridge Rd j/w Pennard Rd (Shepherds Bush Mrkt)- there is surface water across the road (Burst Water Main). Approach with care."

And the general chaos in the area increased on when Askew Road was closed between 11am and midday due two a security alert, though it has now reopened.

Local residents now face ten weeks of disruption on Uxbridge Road due to the work by National Grid.

Bus routes 207 and 283 are diverted up Lime Grove to maintain a westbound service along Uxbridge Road, while all other routes will be diverted via Askew Road.

" We are working very hard to make sure the National Grid keeps the disruption of their works to a minimum," says a council spokesman.

National Grid say the work is being done to replace ageing metal gas pipes with newer pipes made from a more durable material.

Residents can expect delays and are asked to try and avoid the area if possible. National Grid has said new mains will be inserted into the old pipes where possible and the digging has been scheduled to coincide with planned resurfacing works in the area to minimise disruption.

National Grid project engineer, Pat Nathan, says: " We need to replace these gas mains now to ensure people continue to have safe and reliable gas supplies for heating and cooking."
