Lib Dems Pay Tribute to Supporter Patrician Owen

"Remarkable woman" was winner of TV's Mastermind in 1973

Hammersmith & Fulham Liberal Democrats have announced the death of one of their staunchest local supporters, Patricia Owen.

They have released this statement, paying tribute to Patricia, who they describe as a "remarkable woman".

Hammersmith and Fulham Liberal Democrats have learnt with great sadness that one of our most longstanding members Patricia Owen died unexpectedly but peacefully on Tuesday July 24 at the age of 86.

Patricia was a remarkable woman who grew up in Sydney during the war, and was a radio announcer there in the 1940s.

She studied as a postgraduate at Oxford University, where she met her husband, and became a university lecturer in education.

She is perhaps best-known as the second  winner of Mastermind in 1973, when her specialist subjects were Grand Opera and Byzantine Art.

Patricia had been a member of the Liberal Party and then the Liberal Democrats for as long as anybody can remember, and her daughter is a member in Kensington.

Despite increasing disability as a result of arthritis, Patricia remained active both within the party and within her local community in Hammersmith and Shepherds Bush, and was one of our most formidable telephone canvassers.

She will be sorely missed.

Patricia had asked that a party be held within three months of her death, and we hope to be able to make a further announcement in due course
