It's Time to Plan a Street Party

Residents urged to celebrate Jubilee and Olympics

Hammersmith and Fulham Council is encouraging local residents to begin planning street parties to celebrate this year's two big events - the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics and Paralympics.

Cllr Harry Phibbs, cabinet member for community engagement, says that following last year's royal wedding celebrations, he hopes more people will set up parties this summer for the Diamond Jubilee on June 2-5 and the London 2012 Games, starting on July 27.

Cllr Phibbs says: " Last year’s parties were an incredible sight and everyone had a fantastic time. This year, we are hoping that even more parties will be held, exceeding the 34 for the royal wedding."

The council says it has made it easier for parties to be arranged by cutting the red tape to just one simple online form. Residents without a computer can ask to be sent a paper version of the form.

Cllr Phibbs says: "We have stripped away all the drudgery and hours of completing tiresome bureaucratic forms that used to be necessary when organising a small event, and instead local people have more flexibility and time to concentrate on the fun side of these parties."

The deadline for applications is May 4 for the Queen’s Jubilee and June 29 for the Olympics. Residents requiring a premises licence to sell alcohol at their events will need to apply at least six weeks before their planned event.

The two main requirements for those holding a small event or party are that there must be community approval and that organisers make appropriate arrangements for diverting traffic.

A number of Diamond Jubilee events will also take place across Hammersmith and Fulham. Here's the schedule:

2-5 June	Hammersmith London BID Street Banner Festival Local artists and amateurs designing banners which will then be judged by community representatives. The winning banners will be placed on the borough’s main thoroughfares.
3 June	Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant A flotilla which will extend from Putney Bridge to Tower Bridge. The Queen will lead the flotilla which will include boats from across the UK, the Commonwealth and the World.
3 June	The Big Jubilee Lunch Individuals and communities are free to hold picnics/ lunches as they wish. For 2012 plans for The Big Jubilee Lunch campaign in London, with continued support from the Mayor Boris Johnson and Barbara Windsor, aims to recruit 32 organiser ‘Champions’ and a celebrity ambassador for each borough. The objective will be to encourage local Big Lunch activities in streets and neighbourhoods throughout the capital, ideally on Sunday 3 June, but also over the whole Diamond Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend.

5 June	St Paul’s Service of Thanksgiving and carriage procession
30 June	Fulham Symphony Orchestra Orchestral performance with Jubilee theme.
July	Queen’s Jubilee walking tours Walking tours in Fulham town centre.
September	Queen’s Jubilee Youth Cup Youth competition for Army cadets, boy scouts, army groups.
