Hammersmith and Fulham Residents on New Year Honours List
Led by Professor Stephen Bloom, knighted for services to Medical Science
A number of distinguished residents of Hammersmith and Fulham are among the total of almost 1,000 people who have been included in the newly published New Year Honours List.
Knights Bachelor
Professor Stephen Robert Bloom, who is based at Hammersmith Hospital in London W12 is now a Sir after being honoured for services to Medical Science.
Professor Bloom, who is currently lead clinician for biochemistry at the Trust, is credited as transforming how obesity is understood. Describing his Knighthood as "totally unexpected", he said: " It’s fantastic to see pure science be recognised by the Government as important to the future of the UK."
Professor Bloom, who is also head of division for diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism at Imperial College London, leads 40-strong research team which investigates new treatments for obesity. This research looks at the gut hormones in the body which control appetite and is developing drugs that mimic their effect.
" Obesity is rapidly becoming one of the world’s biggest killers and causes significant personal distress. Here at Imperial we’ve developed a large team to combat this disease, and it’s great to have our work recognised in this way."
In this Olympic year, Charles Lamb Allen, CBE has become one of the Games' first winners, being awarded a knighthood for s, who lives in W14, has been awarded a CBE for services to the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.
Mr Allen is a Non-executive Director of the London Olympic Committee as well as holding a high profile range of directorships and media roles, including the role of Chairman of the largest commercial radio group in Britain, Global Radio, which spawned the Heart Network. He was appointed (CBE) in 2003 for his services to sport and community.

James Bowler, who lives in SW6, has been Principal Private Secretary at No 10 Downing Street since 2010.

Guy Alexander Wilkinson, of SW6, lately Archbishop's Secretary for InterReligious Affairs and National InterReligious Affairs Adviser, has been honoured for services to Inter-Faith Relations.
Order of the British Empire - Officers of the Order of the British Empire
Richard Brunwin, Lately Chief Executive Officer of the Sir Oswald Stoll Foundation in SW6, has been honoured for services to ex-Service Men and Women.
Miss June Taylor, of W14 is Chairman of the Independent Schools Inspectorate and has been honoured for services to Education.
Order of the British Empire - Members of the Order of the British Empire
Magdalen Margaret Christian, Mrs Fergusson, of W6 is Secretary to the Secretary of the Royal Society of Literature and has been honoured for services to Literature.
