Shepherd's Bush Students Celebrate Great GCSEs

Pupils undaunted by new grading system and tougher exams

After impressive results achieved by H&F's A Level students, with a 97% pass rate, this week has seen equally upbeat news for pupils receiving GCSE results.

Grades are awarded from nine to one. With nine, eight and seven ranging from what would have been A* to A in the old system, and four being similar to a C.

It’s just the third year of GCSE results for Hammersmith Academy and yet again there were impressive gains when it came to top grades.

75% of pupils at the Cathnor Road school achieved the benchmark grades  - the equivalent of five GCSEs graded A* to C.

More than 90% got a grade nine to four in English, and more than 70% got a nine to four in maths.

Headteacher Gary Kynastan, pictured below with some of his students said he was delighted with the school's success.

"These results show that the academy is transitioning very well into the new style nine to one GCSE grading," he said.

"Our students are yet again achieving above national expectations and this reflects their professional attitude towards their studies and their
willingness to succeed.

"The staff and parents deserve recognition in their endless support of the students. I would like to congratulate our GCSE students and look forward to welcoming them into our Sixth Form."

Students are also celebrating some impressive results at Burlington Danes Academy. Top performing students at the White City campus were undaunted by new, harder exams and romped home with a selection of top marks.

Headteacher Paul Bhatia said: “We are delighted with the performance of our students in their GCSEs and wish them all well as they go onto Sixth Form and College.

"Our top performing students achieved some exceptional grades that we are very proud of."

Among the high flyers was Omar Sayeed-Iqbal, who scooped an incredible seven nines, two eights and one seven. Jai Patel also achieved seven nines and three sevens, while Felix Butcher, pictured right, achieved six nines and three eights and Sadek Al-Saabari and Ibrahim Ibrahim both gained four nines and four eights.

At Phoenix Academy in White city, executive headteacher Oli Knight said the school had made "huge gains" in the number of higher grades in science, history and computing in particular, while the percentage of pupils getting a grade four and above including English and maths was up by about a third.

This is testament to all the hard work of students and staff," he said."“We are so proud of you all. Hard work pays off."

Big success stories at Phoenix included Bruce Chen, who got an average of a grade eight across all his subjects with grade nines in maths, biology, chemistry, and physics. Bethany McNeill exceeded her targets by almost three grades on average, including grade eights in literature and history, Marwa Mohammed who achieved two grade nines and four grade eights, Zuzannah Curylo, who achieved grades between seven and nine in all her nine subjects and Madeena Hadafmand who achieved one grade nine, three grade eights and four grade sevens.

Across the borough, passes at grades nine to five in maths leapt from 55% to 61%, and those at grades nine to five in English rose from 73 to 74%.

"Having gone to school in the borough, I know first hand how wonderful our schools are," said Cllr Larry Culhane, Cabinet Member for Children and Education. "At a time when the exam system is changing and getting tougher, these results give us even more reason to celebrate. Congratulations to all students, families and staff on their achievements this year."
