H&F Wins Mayor of London's Cultural Impact Award

But misses out on becoming London Borough of Culture in near future

 

Hammersmith & Fulham has missed out on becoming the next London Borough of Culture - but it has won a Cultural Impact Award, which means it will receive up to £200,000 from London's Mayor.

H&F was one of seven boroughs shortlisted to become the next London Borough of Culture, along with Croydon, Greenwich, Hounslow, Lewisham, Haringey and Sutton.

This week, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, announced that Lewisham has been awarded the title of London Borough of Culture for 2021 with Croydon winning the accolade for 2023.

However, the Mayor also announced that Hammersmith & Fulham, Haringey and Sutton will all receive up to £200,000 each to deliver individual cultural projects after being chosen for a Cultural Impact Award. 

H&F's project is Hammersmith and Fulham - Sounds Like Hammersmith & Fulham which  will train young people in music-making and event-producing by leading music industry professionals culminating in young people curating a music festival. 

After the announcement, the council tweeted @lbhf: "WE’VE WON! Received the Cultural Impact Award this morning from @Mayoroflondon. We want to build on the success of our Arts Strategy & turn H&F into a new cultural capital which all residents can benefit from and enjoy @LDN_Culture #londonboroughofculture #mylocalculture."

The London Borough of Culture is a major initiative launched by Mayor Sadiq Khan, inspired by the UK City and European Capital of Culture programmes. The competition has fulfilled one of the Mayor's key manifesto pledges by strengthening London's reputation as an international powerhouse for culture.

The inaugural winner in 2019 was Waltham Forest, whose programme included more than 1,000 cultural events, workshops and activities across the year, and involved all 88 schools in the borough.

Brent is the London Borough of Culture for 2020, with a bold programme, curated by young people and including events at Wembley Park, new work by Zadie Smith and the return of the MOBO Awards to the borough.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “We created the London Borough of Culture to give Londoners a chance to create and enjoy world-class culture on their doorstep. Waltham Forest's programme has shown its power to bring together communities and inspire young people, and Brent's exciting programme for 2020 is set to continue this success.
