Heads Praise Dedication of W12's A Level Students

Hammersmith and Burlington Danes' high flyers head for top universities

Students in local secondary schools are celebrating after achieving impressive A Level results.

Across the borough, 24% of pupils received marks of A* or A, with 140 A* grades were awarded in local schools.

H&F's overall pass rate is 96% this year – just one point behind the national average of 97%.

At Hammersmith Academy in Cathnor Road, students surpassed last year’s high attainments, with the shool's 85 A Level students achieving 135 A*-C grades, and 83% exceeding their target grades in at least one subject.

Among the high flyers are Calvin Hartley who, with A*, A* and A in history, economics and politics under his belt, is going to Trinity Hall, Cambridge, to read history and politics.

His colleague Bushra Elmoussati gained A*, A*, A in geography, English literature and politics, and has achieved a place at Mansfield College, Oxford to read geography.

Youssef Awadalla gained A*, A, A in maths, chemistry and biology and will go on to study medicine at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, part of Queen Mary University.

Another bound for Queen Mary’s is Ibtihal Ibrahim, whose A, A, B in chemistry, biology and maths guarantees a place studying chemical engineering and Rise Chambati-Woodhead, who joined the academy in the sixth form, was awarded A* in sociology and A in psychology, with a starred distinction in BTEC sport and will study psychology at Bristol.

The careers lead at the Shepherd's Bush, Sophie Harrowes, said it was wonderful to see the personalised one-to-one expert support yield dividends.

"Our students have really benefited from the mentor programme we have developed alongside St Paul’s Girls and St Paul’s Boys School," she said. " It is great that we are establishing a reputation for getting students into the very best universities in the country.”

Headteacher Gary Kynaston said he was 'absolutely delighted' with the results. "To have students going to both Oxford and Cambridge, as well as Russell Group universities, reflects the level of dedication our students and staff put in," he said, adding that the academy’s sixth form was now ranked the No1 state sixth form in our borough.

"Whether you are a student who started in Year 7 or you joined us in the first year of sixth form, you are capable of achieving your very best at Hammersmith Academy," he said.

At Ark Burlington Danes Academy in Wood Lane, principal Paul Bhatia was equally delighted. He said: "It is wonderful to see the hard work and dedication of our students and teachers pay off on results day.

"The superb careers guidance offered at BDA has helped our students gain more Russell Group university admissions and top level apprenticeships than ever before, opening the door to the careers of their choice.

"We are all very proud of their achievements and wish our sixth formers the very best for the exciting road ahead."

Pupils are now off to universitieis including Oxford, King's College, Queen Mary ad University Colleg. Amongst the many individual successes to share, the academy says the following students have performed particularly well at A level:

Ayub Tagrerout achieved A*A*A (University College London)
Faycal Mallek achieved A*AA (University of Oxford)
Moaz El Kout Oustah achieved A*AA (University College London)

Marwa Roomi, pictured above, achieved AAA (King’s College London)
Achilleas Voudouris achieved A*A*B (University of Glasgow)

There were also some outstanding BTEC results this year, with the following students achieving at least 2 of the highest available grades (equivalent to A* at A level):
