Bach's Goldberg Variations At St Peter's Church

Violinist David Juritz will be joined by the guitarist Craig Ogden and cellist Tim Hugh

On Sunday 15 April at 7pm there is a concert at St Peter's Church, Southfield Road – including Bach’s Goldberg Variations, as well as music by Mozart.

Violinist David Juritz will be joined by the guitarist Craig Ogden and cellist Tim Hugh, for the next concert in this occasional series.

The variations take their name from a harpsichordist Johann Gottlieb Goldberg who is likely to have been their first regular performer. Bach’s set of 30 variations have fascinated composers, musicians and audiences ever since their publication in 1741.

Although Bach intended the work for an instrument with two keyboards, the variations are now more often performed on the piano where they present formidable technical challenges with hands crossing and fingers colliding as they move up and down the modern instrument’s single keyboard.

Following a long tradition of arranging and re-orchestrating instrumental repertoire, the violinist David Juritz has produced his own transcription of the variations for guitar, violin and cello in which he will be joined by the leading guitarist, Craig Ogden, and Principal Cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra and Tchaikovsky Competition winner, Tim Hugh.
