A Host of Events Planned for the Watermans Weekender

Watermans, the local arts centre, is planning to host a wide array of events and activities to showcase what goes on at the venue. For families there will be installations, free screenings, theatre workshops, and children’s theatre; for adults, there will be music, DJs, cabaret, art installations, and special screenings and events in the cinema.

The Watermans Weekender (Friday 10, Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 June ) will host over 20 events. Things kick off on Friday with the Hurly Burly Theatre’s Make Me A Tree (for 0-2-year-olds). On Saturday and Sunday, there will be free children’s screenings in the cinema, and on Saturday the award-winning Roustabout children’s theatre group will be running children’s workshops and will stage their fun & interactive production, ‘Make Me A Story’. Air Giants will be installing a huge inflatable robotic snail, LUMA, at the front of the venue (on Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 June), an exhibition based on the illustrated children’s book, 101 Dishes for the Emperor will be hosted by author Zahra Hassan & illustrator Soni Zuberi Shah on Saturday 11 June.

There is plenty for adults too. From Wednesday 8 June through to Sunday 12 June, the award-winning Darkfield will be bringing their immersive experience to Watermans. A huge shipping container will be stationed at the front of Watermans and this will house ’COMA’ which will be decked out like some sinister hospital ward. Imagine the moment of waking up is actually the moment when your dream begins…and what kind of trick will your mind play on you?

On Friday, 10 June, lauded jazz fusion clarinettist, Arun Ghosh returns to Watermans with his band to celebrate his Seclused in Light album launch. On Saturday, 11 June Watermans hosts the chaotic cabaret cult, An Evening Without Kate Bush. The show arrives on the back of a sold-out national UK tour and will feature Kate Bush’s songs.

In the cinema, Watermans are hosting a screening of Cold War and film discussion with resident experts and cinephiles, Jon Davis and Michael Brooke. There will also be specially selected films from the South Asian Film Festival and a rare screening of the documentary film, Suburban Steps To Rockland about the Ealing Jazz Club and its role in helping create the British rock scene in the 60s which will be introduced by the film’s producer, Alistair Young.

Finally, the Axis Mvndi, an installation in the gallery, is a device that sends radio waves in space in order to draw shapes at a cosmic scale.

DJs will play laid-back sounds on a revamped outdoor River Terrace on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at various times.

Many events are free and paid events all have concession pricing – you are advised to book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment but there will also be lots to see and do that is non-ticketed.
