Ian Keable on 'The Art of Deception: The Link Between Magic and Art'

The Hammersmith & Fulham u3a's programme continues with May's talk from Ian Keable "The Art of Deception: The Link Between Magic and Art"

The talk covers how magicians have appeared in art over the centuries whether in satirical prints or cartoons (with vivid examples).

It takes place on Tuesday 10 May. The local group holds its monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of the month, from 10:00am till 12 noon, in St Mary’s Church Hall W14 9BA. The hall is on the corner of Edith/Gliddon Road and Hammersmith Road and has disabled access. It is about 300m north of Barons Court station or from Hammersmith bus station a 9, 10, 27 or 391 going east will take you to the Brook Green stop (second stop) 100m from the hall.

Attendance is free for members. Visitors are welcome for a donation of £2.50 which will be refunded to those joining on the day.

The meetings begin with an update from the Chair, current news from Group Conveners and any other items of interest. In the final part, there will be an invited speaker talking on a range of interesting topics, usually supported by audio-visual equipment.

Tuesday June 14th - Bernard Blockett "The Heritage of Gilbert and Sullivan"
The talk will cover G&S's historical background with an overview of the works and their place in our theatrical culture (with examples).

Tuesday July 12th - "London's Air Ambulance Charity"
The speaker will outline the charity's work to date with examples of the many instances where lives and livings have been saved by their prompt attendance at an accident.

Tuesday August 9th - Geoff Lambert "My Canal Mania"
The speaker has walked almost 4,000 miles along canals and railway routes, created a business plan to rebuild the Buckingham canal as well as volunteering as a bricklayer/dry stone wall builder on canals.

Tuesday October 11th - Anthony Poulton-Smith "What is a Scientific Term?"
What is it and how many do we use every day? How many are understood and what was their original meaning? The speaker will endeavour to answer these and other questions.

Tuesday November 8th - Dr James Taylor "Picture Postcards 18040-1950"
Artist-drawn postcards were the most popular art form from the Edwardian era to the outbreak of WW2. The talk will cover the popular subjects, styles and the reasons why their popularity waned.

Tuesday December 13th - Christmas Party

The organisation aims to offer a chance for its members to learn, stay active and have fun in later life by being a local social, friendly, low-cost and open to all. It was formerly known as the University of the Third Age

The annual membership fee for U3A of £20 covers free admission to monthly meetings, access to all Groups and newsletters/diaries by email. You will also receive 4 copies of the magazine "Third Age Matters" in the post. The membership year runs from April to March but if you join before April you enjoy a bonus period with no fee due until April the following year.

Membership also gives access to National and London Region U3A summer schools, study days, 'Shared Learning' Projects and other events.
