Closing The Roads... For Fun

Get the kids back on the streets

Do you remember the days when children could play out safely on the streets?

Ealing Council is encouraging that to happen again by helping set up a PlayStreet.

A PlayStreet is a two to three hour, stewarded road closure for children to play out once a month.

Council officers provide residents with all the necessary documents and also apply for a temporary traffic order on their behalf to arrange for the road to be closed.

The first PlayStreet in the borough came about after a successful street party in Goldsmith Avenue, Acton. Residents were surprised how many children lived on their street, and wanted to set up regular PlayStreets on their road.

The fourth PlayStreet took place in Milton Road, Hanwell, on 25 October with more than 100 residents taking part.

Ten year old Elina Mistry said: “We had more space to play and all my friends were there. It feels safe because there are wardens. As I live so close, I could go without my parents and that made me feel independent”.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for transport and environment said: “Ealing Council has been working with residents in ensuring the future of our children’s play is safeguarded. This is a fantastic initiative in ensuring that children across the borough are able to play safely on the streets and we would like as many residents as possible to set up their very own PlayStreet”.
