Petros Singers is marking forty years since its foundation with a special concert, The Passing of the Years.

It is taking place on Saturday 1 July at 7:30pm, at their ‘home’ in St Peter’s Church, Black Lion Lane, Hammersmith (W6 9BE).

The concert will feature Jonathan Dove ’ s song cycle, The Passing of the Year, along with some old favourites including works by Brahms, Chilcott, Pearsall and Rachmaninoff.

The auditioned chamber choir will also be performing a new work they have commissioned from award-winning composer Kerensa Briggs. Her music has been performed internationally at venues including St Paul ’ s Cathedral and the Sistine Chapel, and is regularly broadcast on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM and BBC Radio Scotland by ensembles such as The Tallis Scholars and the BBC Singers.

Petros Singers raises money through collections at its concerts for London Youth Choirs, supporting its mission to unlock young people ’ s potential through the power of choral singing. The choir is delighted that LYC West and their director Olivia Shotton will be joining them to help celebrate their 40th anniversary.

Richard Bannan, the choir’s Musical Director, will be conducting, and they will also be joined by Andrew Wells, who will be playing some solo organ works, and accompanist Michael Higgins.

The choir’s origins lie in St Peter ’ s Church Hammersmith when, in 1983, some members of the church choir wanted to form a group to sing more secular works. Petros Singers is a registered charity with the aim of promoting a love of choral music and excellence in musical performance through regular concerts and singing workshops. The choir has around 40 members and sings a wide range of secular and sacred choral music. It also runs a bursary scheme for talented young singers under 28 years of age who are offered a free place to sing with the choir (subject to audition).

In addition to its programme of concerts, Petros Singers organise annual singing workshops which are led by leading singing teachers or choral conductors. Their next workshop on 25 November explores Spem in Alium, Thomas Tallis’ seminal motet composed for eight choirs. Each choir will be led by a professional singing teacher, and this full-day event culminates in participants performing Spem in Alium at a ticketed recital.

Tickets for The Passing of the Years cost £20, £17 concessions, £5 under 28s and are available online and also on the door.

For further informatio n about this concert and workshop, to book tickets, or if you are interested in joining the choir, see its website.
