Ealing Needs You!

Be a part of the borough's first ever half-marathon

At 9.15am on September 30, thousands of runners will set off from Walpole Park to take on the 13.1-mile challenge.

But an army of volunteers will be needed to ensure everyone has a safe, rewarding and fun day.

Volunteer co-ordinator Arlene Gallagher said that with more than 3,900 runners already signed up – and hundreds more expected to join them – the marshals have a vital role to play.

“Some of the marshals will have a very simple job – such as pointing out the route to make sure people go in the right direction,” she said. “But that’s a crucial role if everyone is to have a great day.”

Fortunately, the Brentford Army cadets are already on board to lend a hand with tasks like manning the bag storage area. And organisers are delighted The Challenge Network charity is on board.

Two groups of 60 young volunteers will help with course organisation, marking the culmination of their summer project. Many will be helping to prepare the course and set up the race “village” on the day before the race, while others will help with the clear-up operation to ensure the race has minimal impact on the community.

But organisers also hope runners will encourage any friends and family who are coming along to support them to help out with the organisation.

Road closures will mean no-one is expected to stop traffic and all volunteers will be given soft drinks and snacks. Organisers say they are grateful to those already signed up to support the event – including local residents groups, charities, Scouts, students and churches, as well as employees of both Danone and Plasser.
