As part of the 250th anniversary celebrations of J.M.W. Turner’s birth, local residents are invited to a free public talk titled Turner’s Greatest Work of Art: Preparing Sandycombe to Receive His Paintings.

The event is taking place at 7:30pm on Monday 20 October at the Chiswick Memorial Club, Bourne Place, W4.

The speaker, Ricky Pound, is the former house director of Sandycombe Lodge in Twickenham, the modest villa designed and built by Turner himself in 1813. Mr Pound played a pivotal role in transforming the Grade II* listed building into a functioning exhibition space, making it the only site in the world where Turner’s paintings have been displayed within a house he personally designed.

The talk will delve into the logistical and conservation challenges of curating such a unique venue, including environmental controls, security, and the delicate balance between public access and preservation. Pound will also reflect on the work of art historians and curators who have contributed to subsequent exhibitions at Sandycombe, offering insight into Turner’s architectural vision and its place within his broader artistic legacy.

J.M.W. Turner, one of Britain’s most celebrated landscape painters, spent part of his youth in Brentford and maintained strong ties to west London throughout his life. Sandycombe Lodge, originally conceived as a retreat from the pressures of London, now serves as a focal point for Turner scholarship and public engagement.

Admission is free and open to all, with no booking required.
