Brentford and Chiswick Local History Society Meeting

Tracing Convict Lives from West London using the Digital Panopticon

The Brentford and Chiswick Local History Society have a meeting on 24 April at 7.30pm at the Chiswick Memorial Club, Bourne Place.

There will be an illustrated talk entitled Tracing Convict Lives from West London using the Digital Panopticon, 1780-1925. It is a presentation and demonstration by Bob Shoemaker, Professor of British History, University of Sheffield & co-founder of the Old Bailey Proceedings Online.

Prof Bob Shoemaker

Professor Robert Shoemaker is involved in a new digitisation project. Building on Old Bailey Online, the Proceedings of the Old Bailey 1674-1913, it provides access, through sophisticated record linkage, to detailed evidence about Old Bailey convicts, some of them from west London, who were either transported to Australia or imprisoned in Britain between 1780 and 1865.

Professor Shoemaker will present the key findings of the project, particularly concerning the different impact of the two punishments on convict lives, including their reoffending, health, longevity, and family formation.

The Society's talks usually take place on the third Monday of the month.

Remember that Afton House does not open until 7pm.
