Hounslow's Mayor to host Asian quake fundraiser

Cllr Darshan Grewal will preside over dinner in aid of the earthquake victims

Hounslow’s Mayor, Cllr Darshan Grewal, is hosting a fundraiser next Wednesday 19th October 2005 in aid of the Asian earthquake.

The event, to be held at the Civic Centre in Hounslow, will include dinner, a raffle and an auction, with all proceeds going to the Disasters Emergency Committee.

Cllr Grewal said: “The earthquake in Pakistan has caused tremendous loss of life, and left many thousands of people severely injured and homeless. I appeal to you to help them by making a donation.”

Tickets for the fundraiser, priced at £10, are available from the Mayor’s Office (020 8583 2253).

All donations big or small are appreciated. Anyone wishing to make a donation by cheque should make it out to the Mayor’s Charity. If you wish to make a cash donation, please contact Bob Wearing, Head of Member Services, on 020 8583 2253.

More than £2m had already been donated to the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal for the Asian earthquake, ahead of its official 13th October launch.  Many organisations have launched their own appeals through the DEC, an umbrella organisation which groups 15 major charities including Oxfam, Islamic Relief and Christian Aid. A DEC spokesman said that funds raised "will go straight to work" in the areas affected by the quake that struck the heart of the disputed Kashmir region.
