Ellen Burroughs and Sophie Axford-Hawkins explore the nature of Knots

Ellen Burroughs and Sophie Axford-Hawkins grew up in the Ealing area, Sophie now lives in Chiswick and has done for many years, whilst Ellen lives nearby in Hammersmith.  They are now working together on putting on their first exhibition, Knot Exactly, at Hepsibah Gallery in W6 from 28th August to 2nd September 2009.

In an exclusive five day exhibition at West London’s Hepsibah Gallery, Knot Exactly explores the nature of knots and plaits, examining both artists’ individual connection to a tool that is said to predate the wheel. Burroughs’ collection of pencil drawings on hot pressed watercolour paper examine the intricacy of the subject, exposing it at its most sensitive. As a jeweller, Axford-Hawkins explores the literal processes of knotting and rope making traditions whilst incorporating selected vintage pearls and crystals, alongside precious metals.

Ellen Burroughs is a recent graduate of Leeds College of Art, and currently works in drawing and print. Winner of the Northern Art Show Award in 2008, she now practises as an artist and illustrator and plans to set up in a small studio in Paris from September of this year.

Sophie Axford-Hawkins is a jeweller, specialising in reworking vintage stones and antique pieces. With a background in sculpture and fine art, Sophie brought into her jewellery exciting and innovative techniques alongside traditional craft skills. She works primarily on privately commissioned pieces liaising closely with her client to create unique and exquisite compositions.

The exhibition runs from 11 AM to 6 PM between the 28th August and 2nd September in the Hepsibah Gallery, which is located in the Brackenbury Village in Hammersmith.
