The life of Virginia Woolf was celebrated in an extensive exhibition of carefully selected portraits and rare archival material at the National Portrait Gallery in 2014.
The exhibition included first editions of Woolf’s novels (with woodcuts by Vanessa Bell), letters from Virginia and Leonard Woolf to their friends, and Gisele Freund’s colour photographs of Woolf, as well as a copy of the Black Book, a list of persons to be arrested and imprisoned by the Nazis in the event of an invasion of Britain, which included both Virginia and Leonard Woolf.
Biographer and art historian Frances Spalding, who curated the exhibition, will be discussing her work and the archives relating to Woolf as well as her most recent book, Virginia Woolf: Art, Life and Vision, which was written to coincide with the exhibition.
