Ealing's Fencing Youngsters Take Bronze

At the London Youth Games

Ealing enjoyed a successful weekend at Europe’s largest annual youth sports event. The borough’s youngsters won bronze in the fencing and eased through the male and female hockey and junior tennis qualifying rounds at the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games events on 13/14 June.

The fencing team made a valiant defence of the title they won last year, settling for bronze this year at Redbridge Leisure Centre on Sunday 14 June.

The hockey teams also showed plenty of mettle as they came through tough qualifying sections at the same East London venue.

Meanwhile further south, the borough’s junior tennis team came through their qualifying group at Sutton Tennis Academy. The qualified teams can now look forward to competing at the finals at Crystal Palace on 4/5 July against the cream of young London sporting talent.

Ealing’s fencing team manager Richard Johnson was proud of his team's effort. He said:

“Everyone did brilliant. Junior, seniors, I’m very impressed with everyone. I can’t ask for anymore.

“We’re proud to represent Ealing, I’m proud to represent these kids that came along because they did a brilliant job.”

The London Youth Games is Europe’s largest annual youth sports event and is driving the legacy for increased participation in competitive sport and volunteering for young Londoners.

A record 126,897 young Londoners took part in the record-breaking 2014 Balfour Beatty London Youth Games, taking the event to over 1 million participants since it first launched in 1977.
