Ealing Council has reached a major milestone in its active travel programme with the installation of its 150th bike hangar. The latest unit was placed on Avenue Road in Acton, one of nine hangars installed in a single week, marking the completion of a borough-wide rollout promised in 2022.

Council Leader Peter Mason and Councillor Paul Driscoll, Cabinet Member for Climate Action, visited one of the newly installed hangars on Kenilworth Road to mark the occasion. Other recent installations include hangars on Birkbeck Road, Petersfield Road, Saville Road, Highlands Avenue, Southfield Road, Brookfield Road in Acton, and Ivy Crescent in Chiswick.

Each bike hangar provides six secure parking spaces for bicycles and costs just 70p per month—or £8.40 per year—making Ealing’s scheme one of the most affordable in London. The council’s target was to install 150 hangars by 2026, offering a total of 900 secure cycle spaces. That goal has now been met ahead of schedule.

Councillor Mason stated, “Having a safe and affordable place to park your bike is vital to getting people cycling. That’s why we promised to install 150 hangars with 900 spaces by 2026 and slashed the cost of using them, to make them the cheapest in London. It’s been really popular with cyclists and is part of our commitment to support active travel and the environment by making it easier to cycle, walk or wheel.”

Councillor Driscoll added, “All of the bike hangars are in locations suggested by the community, who told us where they wanted storage for their bikes. It’s a big step in encouraging people to cycle and making our air cleaner.”

The rollout places Ealing among several London boroughs investing significantly in secure cycle infrastructure. Hackney and Wandsworth have larger networks—with Hackney planning to double its hangars to 1,325 by 2026 and Wandsworth already exceeding 340 units.

Residents can find their nearest hangar and apply for a space via the operators’ websites: Cyclehoop and Falco.
