Tens of thousands of people came into central London to see in the New Year (2014). Viewing areas filled up quicker than in previous years with thousands of people arriving early to take in the spectacular firework display which has become a focal point for many to mark the New Years Eve celebrations.
Around 3,800 police officers worked to support the event organisers and stewards, along with colleagues from British Transport Police and other emergency services to keep revellers safe.
Chief Inspector Robyn Williams said: "This year has seen its share of memorable events including the birth of a Royal baby, a British Wimbledon men's champion and the hottest summer on record since 2006. More than enough reasons to celebrate and many thousands of people journeyed into London to do just that and welcome the New Year in.
"Visitors were not put off by the threat of wind and rain and the viewing areas filled up quicker than ever before. Officers worked hard, alongside stewards, to keep people safe during the event and ensure that everyone who came into central London was able to make their way home at the end of the night.
"Crowds were good natured and there were no major issues reported to police.
"Though the festivities have drawn to a close, officers continue to work through the night to facilitate the clean up operation and bring the area back to normality in time for the New Year's Day parade."
As of 04:30 on Wednesday 1 January, there were a total of 100 arrests made by officers working on the policing operation for New Year's Eve.
