Volunteer Drivers Sought For Food Project

Can you help FareShare?

A local project to deliver good quality surplus food to charities and community groups around outer West London is urgently seeking volunteer drivers before it launches in the New Year.

The scheme will see FareShare London deliver surplus food from its warehouse in Deptford to Southall Baptist Church, where the charity will act as a collection point for food to be shared out among local charities across Ealing. However, for the scheme to work, FareShare needs more volunteer drivers to transport the food to Southall.

FareShare currently provides surplus food to over 240 local charities such as children’s breakfast clubs, day centres for older people, homeless shelters and domestic violence refuges. These frontline charities use the FareShare food to make over 1.9 million meals for vulnerable people in the capital.

Once the project is up and running it will help FareShare’s mission to ensure no good food goes to waste and support even more hungry people with surplus food in Ealing and beyond.

FareShare London’s Development Manager Rachel Ledwith, said: “We’ve all been working hard to bring the project together with Heathrow Community Foundation and Ealing Council. It would be a shame if the project couldn’t fulfil its potential because we don’t have enough drivers. The food means that a charity’s food budget can stretch a lot further, and the variety of the food, especially the fruit and vegetables, is something all the charities in the area are really excited about receiving.

“It doesn’t take much to be a volunteer driver – and it is incredibly rewarding. You just need a driving licence and the ability to commit to a few hours every week. Our drivers are all ages, and come from all walks of life. We have retired people, shift workers, and younger people taking a break in between jobs.”
