Survey on measures to tackle violence against females ends soon
Council is seeking to build on earlier measures taken after previous consultation

The deadline to make comments on a survey by Ealing Council on its further plans to reduce male violence against women and girls (MVAWG) is approaching.

Violence against women and girls includes harassment, stalking, rape, sexual assault, murder, honour-based abuse, domestic abuse, and coercive control. While men and boys also suffer from many of these forms of abuse, they disproportionately affect women.
A new strategy to address MVAWG in the borough of Ealing was introduced earlier this year following an earlier consultation that took place in January 2022 which received over 3,000 responses.
About two-thirds of women and girls said that more CCTV would make them feel safer and 93% wanted to see improved street lighting
This resulted in the installation of 14 new HD CCTV cameras in key locations and a £2.1million investment in improvements to street lighting.
A ‘one stop shop’ web site dedicated to MVAWG was launched which provides information on getting support after experiencing unacceptable attitudes or unwanted sexual behaviour.
There was a commitment to the launch of an education program to be offered to every secondary school, looking at healthy relationships and giving young people the tools to identify and challenge unacceptable behaviours.
Other activities such as ‘Walk and Talk’ events and community engagement events with communities that have lower levels of confidence in the police have been held. All female victims of unwanted sexual attention, which results in the recording of a crime, will have follow up contact by an officer.
The council says that these are just the first steps that will be taken by the Safer Ealing Partnership and now more feedback is needed on the developing plan.
Councillor Jasbir Anand is Ealing Council’s lead member for tackling inequality. She said, “Acts of violence and harassment, even when they may seem small, cause immeasurable damage to their victims, and to society more widely – making everyone less safe.
“We’re proud of the progress that has been made on this issue by the council in recent years. This new listening exercise will help us understand where concerns remain and how we can address them so women and girls can feel safe in our community.”
