New sacks for easier plastic recycling coming our way

Residents are set to receive new white sacks for their plastics recycling from next month.

Ealing Council will be distributing one reusable sack to every household eligible for the green box recycling service from 7 July, 2008.

The white sacks will replace the old system of putting plastics in a separate green box or plastic bags.

Councillor Sue Emment, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Services, said: “Since we introduced the plastic recycling service in November 2007, Ealing has hit its 30 per cent recycling target every month. We’re introducing these new white sacks to make it even easier for residents to recycle, and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.”

Ealing residents recycled 45 per cent more of their waste in May, compared to the same time last year. More than 4,000 tonnes was recycled, composted or turned into organic fertiliser and electricity in May.

Plastics are collected weekly, on the same day as refuse and recycling days. Most plastics can be put out for collection except large items, such as garden furniture, toys, polystyrene and any electrical items.
