Council launches campaign to stub out cigarette litter
Ealing Council sparked up a campaign today to clamp down on cigarette litter across the borough.
The month-long campaign, in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy, will encourage smokers to bin their butts or risk a fine of up to £80.
The Council’s envirocrime officers will be out in force educating people outside rail and tube stations where cigarette litter is at its worst. They will also be handing out pouches so people can always stub out their cigarette even if there are no bins in sight.
Director of Street Environment, Joe Tavernier, said: “One of our top priorities is making sure our streets are clean. We have been seeing more cigarette litter on the streets since the smoking ban last year and we are now clamping down on the offenders.
“It’s disgusting to see places littered with cigarette ends, there is no excuse. We have some of the cleanest streets in London, but there is still room for improvement.”
An outdoor advertising campaign includes posters, banners and beer mats that will be distributed around the borough to inform people about the campaign, so there will be no excuse for smokers to continue littering the streets.
