As Ealing invests millions in borough’s roads and footpaths
Ealing Council has announced an extra £7.5 million investment package to resurface roads and pavements across the borough.
The investment, which is part of the Council’s budget proposals for 2008/09, is the largest amount spent on improving the borough’s streets in a decade.
Last year the Council spent £3.5million on roads and pavements, but before that the largest spend in the last 10 years was £1.9million in 2002/03.
A team of inspectors works throughout the year to visit streets across the borough and identify which are in need of repair. The work will involve resurfacing whole lengths or large sections of roads to bring them up to standard.
Leader of the Council, Councillor Jason Stacey, said: “There is no doubt that there are a lot of roads and footpaths across the borough that need improving. Last year the council substantially increased the amount invested in this area, but there remains a lot of work to do. This record investment will ensure we can increase the pace of improvement and deliver the standard of roads and footpaths that residents rightly demand.”
Ealing Council’s 2008/9 budget and Council Tax level will formally be agreed at a meeting of the Council on 4th March.
The schedule of proposed work will be discussed at a meeting of the Council’s Cabinet in April. Once approved the Council has to carry out a statutory three-month consultation with utility companies before work can begin.
