Workshops Aim To Inspire a Passion for Sustainable Fashion

#EalingSewnUp bringing together crafters and artists with local children

Events will be taking place across the borough

ActForEaling, OPEN Ealing, @DesignItYourself and Falcons Pre-Prep Chiswick are joining forces to launch #EalingSewnUp.

The initiative aims to connect crafters, artists and fashionistas of the Ealing borough beginning with a programme of children’s upcycling workshops run by local artist, Toyah Hemmings, founder of @DesignItYourself.

Toyah said, “I love to inspire individuality and creative flair and teach 'how-to', using easy-to-follow fun, creative techniques that encourage the reduce/reuse/recycle ethos in our wardrobe! We do not need fancy or expensive equipment to create something fabulous!”

Workshops will include pop art t-shirt design, jeans refashion skills and no-sew tote bag creation. The workshops will be hosted in April throughout Ealing with the aim of inspiring young people, from 5 years and above, to develop new talents and connect with others who share their creative and environmental interests.

Mandie Wilde, COO of OPEN Ealing said, “We are delighted to be collaborating with ActForEaling to launch #EalingSewnUp. We have incorporated a really exciting range of sustainability design workshops into our events schedule. This is an incredibly dynamic area of design that boosts creativity whilst benefitting our environment.”

Textiles account for 22% of global mixed waste and research has revealed that the fashion industry is the second largest polluter after aviation, accounting for 8-10% of global pollution.

Given we can all make such a big difference to the environment by making more sustainable fashion choices, “dress for true success” is one of ActForEaling’s ten steps for a greener community. #EalingSewnUp has been launched to provide a range of in-person events to complement the practical fashion ideas suggested by ActForEaling which can be found here.

This workshop programme aims to be as inclusive as possible by hosting workshops in locations throughout Ealing borough, making it easier for families to access a workshop nearby. Thanks to support from Falcons Pre-Prep Chiswick, #EalingSewnUp is able to offer concession tickets to provide access to young people who would not usually be able to participate in these upskilling sessions.

Liz McLaughlin, Head of Falcons Pre-Prep Chiswick commented, “As a school, we are constantly committed to finding ways to be more sustainable. This is a key focus of our regular School Council meetings where our pupils make decisions how we can actively reduce our carbon footprints. We are delighted to be able to support this initiative and play a part in helping to educate our future generation in making more sustainable fashion choices in their lives.”
