Celebrating World Car Free Day Throughout The Borough
PlayStreets will close off roads for community events
The borough will be joining in with a variety of activities to mark World Car Free Day on September 22nd.
There will be a number of designated PlayStreets which are designed to provide people with a great chance to bring a sense of community spirit to the whole street by closing off a street to traffic for a short period of time.
It allows neighbours to mingle and run events and activities, and children to play on the road safely.
Councillor Julian Bell, leader of Ealing Council said: “We are once again backing World Car Free Day this year and are supporting local people in setting up Playstreets across the borough. PlayStreets not only foster a great community spirit, they offer an alternative use for the borough’s roads for an afternoon – where children are able to experience the outdoors safely and local people can enjoy each other’s company.
“Encouraging more people to walk, cycle and take public transport is vital as we look to improve air quality and to address the urgent need to address the climate emergency. I hope that the Car Free Day in Ealing will help people to explore other means of transport and leave their cars at home.”
The celebrations will also tie in with Soundbite Festival in West Ealing from
1 – 6pm, Sunday 22 September, at Dean Gardens and Leeland Terrace.
Soundbite festival will be laying on everything from music, food, a craft market, climbing wall and children’s activities, to cookery workshops, football skills, donkey rides and a theatre performance. There will also be yoga and wellbeing sessions running, alongside a free cycle repair service from Dr Bike.
Soundbite Festival is well established in West Ealing and is organised each year by West Ealing Community. This year they have teamed up with Live West Ealing to put on the event and celebrate the area, whilst bringing the community together. A stage with live performances from five acts will be running throughout the course of the festival.
David Highton, who represents West Ealing Community said: “This year’s Soundbite is set to be one of our best with a whole host of activities for all ages. We are delighted to be running our well-established festival with Live West Ealing, who we are working with closely to improve the area. So another great reason to come is to find out more about the project.”
Leeland Road and Leeland Terrace be closed for the afternoon and early evening of 22 September.
Ealing businesses are also being given the opportunity to get involved and promote themselves on the day.
