Ealing hits target of 50% recycling - a year earlier than planned
Ealing Council is celebrating after meeting its recycling target a year early.
Recycling rates have risen by five percentage points in the last year (April 2016-March 2017), after the council introduced alternate weekly collections and wheelie bins.
Final statistics for 2016-17 showed rates increased to 50.66%, up from 45.35% in 2015-16. As a result Ealing has moved up London’s recycling league table and is one of the capital’s best performing boroughs.
The tonnage of food waste recycled from homes across the borough has also risen impressively, with an increase of 46.5% compared to the same period last year. 6,586 tonnes were recycled between 1 April and 31 March, and there has also been a 300% increase in requests for food waste containers from residents since alternate weekly collections began.
Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for transport, environment and leisure said: “Local residents deserve a huge amount of credit for their ongoing efforts to recycle which is great for Ealing and the environment. I’m really proud of the increase we’ve seen over the last year since the introduction of our new collection service in June 2016.
“By making it even easier for local people to recycle, we have met our ambitious target of recycling 50% of household waste, a year ahead of schedule."
Since the council introduced its new waste service blue recycling bins are collected alternate weeks to black ones.
Food waste is collected every week.
