The Cost of Travel in London Rises Again


Details of new fares on tube, rail and buses

Travel in London is more expensive from January 2 as new fares apply. Here are the details:

Tube, DLR and London Overground

Pay as you go:

  • Adult-rate fares will increase by between 10p and 40p 
  • Fares for holders of 16+ Oyster photocards and Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Cards will increase by between 5p and 20p
  • Child-rate fares for 11-15, Under-14 and Child Oyster photocard holders will increase by between 5p and 10p
  • 5-10 Oyster photocard holders continue to travel free

Cash fares

  • Adult cash fares will increase by between 30p and 50p
  • Child-rate cash fares will increase by between 10p and 20p

Daily price capping

  • Adult-rate daily price caps will increase
  • Child-rate peak daily price caps will continue to be half adult rate 
  • Child-rate off-peak daily price caps will increase from £1.30 to £1.40 in Zones 1-9
  • Daily price caps for holders of Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Cards will continue to be half adult rate
  • Daily price caps for holders of selected National Railcards will continue to be at 34 per cent discount on the adult rate for off-peak daily price caps

One Day printed tickets

  • Adult-rate Day Travelcard prices will increase
  • Child-rate Day Travelcard prices will increase
  • Holders of selected National Railcards will continue to get 34 per cent discount on the adult rate for off-peak Day Travelcards
  • Discount rate Day Travelcard (off-peak) for Zones 1-9 will be frozen at £2 for children accompanying an adult holder of the following:
    - Annual Travelcard/National Rail  point-to-point season ticket (Gold Card)
    - Network Railcard 
    - Family & Friends Railcard
    - HM Forces Railcard
  • Group Day ticket for Zones 1-6 will increase from £4.00 to £4.30 for adults and from £1.50 to £1.60 for under-18s

Travelcard Season Tickets

  • Adult-rate Travelcard season ticket prices will increase. Child rate and 18+ Student rate will increase proportionately

Buses and Trams

Pay as you go

  • Adult fare will increase from £1.30 to £1.35
  • Fares for holders of 16+ Oyster photocards, Non-Concessionary 11-15 Oyster photocards, Bus & Tram Discount photocards and Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Cards will remain at 65p

Cash fares

The cash fare will increase from £2.20 to £2.30

Daily price capping

  • The adult-rate daily price cap will increase from £4.00 to £4.20
  • The daily price cap for holders of 16+Oyster photocards, Bus & Tram Discount photocards and Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Cards will increase from £2.00 to £2.10
  • The Non-Concessionary Child daily price cap (applicable to 11-15 Oyster photocard holders whose free bus/tram travel has been withdrawn) will increase from £2.00 to £2.10 in the peak and £1.30 to £1.40 in the off-peak  

Bus & Tram Pass season tickets

  • 7 Day Bus & Tram Pass season tickets will increase as follows:

  • 7 Day Bus & Tram Pass season tickets will increase as follows:
    - Adult rate - from £17.80 to £18.80
    - 18+ Student rate - from £12.40 to £13.10
    - For holders of 16+ Oyster photocards, Non-Concessionary 11-15 Oyster photocards, Bus & Tram Discount photocards and Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Cards - from £8.90 to £9.50
  • Monthly and longer period Bus & Tram Pass season tickets will increase proportionately

National Rail

Pay as you go

  • Adult rate fares will increase by 10p-50p
  • JCP fares will increase by 5p-25p
  • Child rate fares for 5-10, 11-15, Under-14 and Child Oyster photocard holders will increase by 5p-25p
Travelcards and daily price capping
  • Daily price capping and Travelcard prices are the same as for Tube, DLR and London Overground

Using Oyster on the Tube at Heathrow Airport

  • Journeys solely between Heathrow Terminals 123, Heathrow Terminal 4 and Heathrow Terminal 5 will be free for all Oyster card and Oyster photocard holders

Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Cards

  • New Deal photocard has been replaced by the Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Card 

Maximum Oyster fare

If you do not touch in at the start and touch out at the end of your journeys on Tube, DLR, London Overground and National Rail, you may be charged a maximum Oyster fare of up to £7.80.
